1930s Black and Red Evening Gown

This striking 1930s black evening or cocktail dress has an elegant, elongated silhouette, with a close-fitting bodice and hips. The bodice features a soft V neckline and short, cape-like sleeves, while the back is particularly dramatic, with a deep V-shaped opening and crossed wrap-style panels that converge at the waist. The sophisticated construction creates strong diagonal lines while maintaining a sleek, streamlined silhouette. The belt is the same fabric and is attached at one side and snaps on the other.

The fabric appears to be a finely crinkled, pleated rayon crepe or rayon-based elastic fabric, likely incorporating Lastex or another early elastic yarn. The extremely fine, closely spaced ridges create a subtle dimensional, almost striped effect across the solid black surface.

Its stretch and fluid drape allow the fabric to conform closely to the body while retaining the graceful movement characteristic of 1930s fashions. The unusual elasticized fabric makes this an especially interesting example of Depression-era textile innovation.

Adding a dramatic note to the otherwise austere black gown is the deep red velvet trim along the scalloped, softly undulating hem. The plush velvet provides a rich contrast in both color and texture, emphasizing the graceful movement of the skirt. Overall, the combination of black elasticized crinkled rayon, architectural wrap construction, and vivid red velvet edging gives the dress a sophisticated Art Deco character and a distinctly glamorous 1930s appearance.

CONDITION:

I see no issues with the dress. The fabric is so good I couldn’t believe it was vintage (it is.) I am rating this as being in EXCELLENT condition.
